Yamuna Alfambras- Modern Artist
Artists statement
I do not paint nature. I am nature.
In India they call it shakti.
It is alive in everyone and everything - it is this which is aliveness itself.
It exists in the smallest bug and in the sun and the moon, it is this which makes the baby rise to it´s feet and start to walk, it is the aurora borealis and sex and rock´n roll.
I celebrate this when I create art - it is this which is the creating, the creativity and creation itself.
The process
I´m an oily girl. I´m in love with the slowness of the oil; both the smoothness and the resistance it gives me. The texture: like moving in water (not in oil!), it is sensual, maybe a reminiscence of being in the womb. How it slowly flows, but it also sticks, it doesn´t make me nervous!
And the colors! It makes me want to jump of joy. The infinite possibilities of shades and combinations - this freedom. Every color corresponds to a feeling; it´s bodily, it makes me heavy or light, disgusted, quiet, smiling, happy, enjoying. Colors give such a joy just about the whole big creation we are a part of.
About myself
I am more or less a selftaught artist, but I joined a lot of good courses. I was primarly a writer, and I wrote, designed and published my own books of poetry, novels, essays, and also a spiritual magazine, Sophia.
Yamuna Alfambras is my artistname: Yamuna is sanskrit, the name of the second biggest river in India, and of the goddess Yamuna, who is daughter of the sun god Surya and sister of death, Yama. Alfambras is my adopted Portuguese familyname, and is the place where most of the artwork is made.
My official name is Helle Maria Bjerkan. I am from Norway, but I live and work in Portugal.
